(SPAN 386) Searching for Latin America: Constructing Fictions and Identity
Since its inception as an object of conquest, the misprized region known as Latin America has been the home to multiple contested identities. In examining written, filmic, and other visual texts from the pre-Columbian and colonial eras, the nation-building projects of the nineteenth century, the consolidated states of the twentieth century, and up to present day, this class will analyze what it has meant to be “Latin American” over the region’s long history. Prerequisites: SPAN 152 Attribute/Distribution: AL, CC, HU
