MAT 416
Optical Properties of Materials
Interaction of electromagnetic waves with solid, liquid, and gaseous matter: reflection, refraction, polarization, diffraction, scattering, absorption, and luminescence. Factors determining the perceived color of metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, biomaterials, and various nanostructured materials. Overview of the technological applications of optical materials in coatings, lighting, display technologies, lasers, solar cells, and optical communications. Additional coursework work will be required of students seeking the graduate level MAT 416 qualification. Credit will not be given for both MAT 316 and MAT 416 . Prerequisites: MAT 033
