4-2-6 units · Graduate

Draws on the expertise of MIT's Community Innovators Lab (CoLab) and partners with Fight Blight Baltimore (FBB). Students investigate the interconnected challenges of housing vacancy and the tax sale system in Baltimore City. Through data analysis, policy research, and field-based learning, students develop strategies supporting the Stop Oppressive Seizures (SOS) Fund ¿ an initiative aimed at preventing property loss and addressing predatory tax sales. Working both virtually and through a required, multi-day field visit, students engage with residents, civic leaders, and public officials to examine the social, economic, and spatial impacts of vacancy and tax sales. Also explores heirs' property, community-based housing finance, and anti-displacement development strategies. Travel fully supported by department for enrolled students.
