Introduction to Weather Forecasting
A week-long introduction to synoptic meteorology, weather forecasting, and the atmospheric dynamics that govern weather systems. Students analyze weather observations and numerical weather prediction model output while developing practical forecasting skills. Topics include jet streams, atmospheric vortices, weather fronts, advection, storm dynamics, and the forces that shape weather systems. Coursework includes homework assignments, daily forecasting challenges, and a final TV-style forecast presentation. Students complete a required four-hour visit to Blue Hill Observatory, including a tour and experience with real-world weather measurements. Subject features a rotating-tank laboratory demonstration illustrating thermal-front dynamics.
