Modeling the Earth System and Climate

3-0-9 units · Undergraduate

Introduces the foundations of Earth System Models used in climate research and assessments such as those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Examines the major components of the climate system ¿ atmosphere, ocean, land, and cryosphere ¿ and how their processes are represented and coupled in global simulations. Provides experience configuring and running a fully coupled model and analyzing model output. Covers model evaluation, uncertainty, and applications to historical climate and future projections. Culminates in a student-designed modeling experiment and research proposal. Students taking graduate version complete additional work and are expected to submit more detailed proposals.
