Biomaterials Design and Development

3-0-9 units · Graduate

Explores the molecular design, structure-property relationships, and performance of a comprehensive range of materials for biomedical applications. Covers metals/ceramics, polymers, and protein- and peptide-based materials, natural biomaterials, and biohybrid systems. Emphasizes rational material selection and engineering design based on the chemical, mechanical, and biological requirements of tissues and specific medical applications. Topics include emerging strategies for designing new materials, understanding material-tissue integration, host immune responses, immunomodulaton, mechanobiology, and the development of stimuli-responsive and biomimetic strategies to improve material performance. Project-based, with students developing a biomaterial platform that addresses a critical health challenge. Students taking graduate version complete additional assignments.
