Nuclear Physics

3-0-9 units · Graduate

Advanced study of experimental foundations and theoretical understanding of nuclear structure, beginning with the two- and three-nucleon problems, an introduction to lattice QCD, effective field theories of nuclear forces, and nuclear many-body methods. Covers experimental and theoretical aspects of basic nuclear properties, collective and single-particle motion, mean-field models, and ab initio nuclear calculations. Nuclei far from stability, nuclear astrophysics, Big Bang and stellar nucleosynthesis. Electron scattering including nucleon momentum distributions, scaling, and polarization observables. Laser spectroscopy and precision quantum sensing techniques for nuclear science. Symmetry-violating nuclear properties and beyond Standard Model physics. Neutrino physics. Current results in relativistic heavy-ion and hadronic physics. Frontiers and future facilities, with an emphasis on long-range plans for nuclear physics in the US.
