Microbe-mineral Interactions
Introduction to the role of microbes in geochemical and mineral transformations in natural and engineered environments. There is strong emphasis on exploring the relationship between microbial metabolic guilds and biogeochemical cycles at water-mineral interfaces. Topics will include: introductory microbial ecology, diversity, and microbial metabolism; cell surface reactivity and metal sorption; biomineralization and dissolution; and analytical methods. Approach will include the examination of practical examples for practicing environmental geoscientists (e.g., constructed wetlands, contaminated sites, mine tailings, permeable reactive barriers, and mine reclamation). ***Prerequisite: CHEM 105; ESC 211 or BIOL 275; and 30 credits of in-major coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to register in ESC 307 prior to, or concurrently with, this course.***
