WHAT IS AN (AB)NORMAL BODY?
This course introduces the history of science and medicine through disabilities studies literature. The course centers around the guiding question, “What is an (ab)normal body?” Students will better articulate the body as a social, political, and corporeal construct by engaging with this question. This guiding question also encompasses within it additional historical questions such as “Who is a freak?” and, further, “How is the historical category of “freak” conflated with “super” abilities in fictional characters?”
