ANTH 310

Anthropology of Tourism

Three credits · Undergraduate

Tourism is an important industry that provides employment, wealth, and identity for many people around the globe. Although relatively a recent sub-discipline, the anthropology of tourism is an effective approach to studying how this industry impacts those who participate in its complex socio-economic system including both hosts and guests. In this course, we will examine various forms of tourism (e.g., sex/romance tourism, heritage and archaeology of tourism, medical tourism, eco-tourism, and dark tourism) as well as themes of identity, inequality, colonialism and globalization. Prerequisites: ANTH 111, 112. Three credits. Not offered 2026-2027.
