Where in the World Am I? Historical Maps and their Meanings
From the surprisingly accurate maps of ancient Mesopotamia to the interconnectedness of time and space found in early Meso- American maps, from medieval mappamundi to Bayne’s map of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, maps show us important characteristics about the cultures that generated them. Through close and careful examinations of maps created across time and space, this course explores both how maps are artifacts of their cultural milieux and the processes that went into creating and reading maps across history. Three credits.
