CHEM 335

Introduction to Physical Chemistry I

Three credits · Undergraduate

This course begins with an introduction to the three laws of thermodynamics and their application to physical and chemical transformations. Entropy and the natural directions of physical and chemical transformations are discussed. The course then introduces Gibbs energies and chemical potentials and looks at their applications to spontaneity, chemical reaction equilibrium, and phase equilibria. The course ends with an introduction to the physical chemistry of real gases and the concept of activity and fugacity. Credit will be granted for only one of CHEM 231 or CHEM 335. Prerequisites: CHEM 102 or 122, 235; MATH 107, 122, 127 or ENGR 122. Three credits and lab/tutorial.
