The Making of Modern South Asia, 1757-1947

1.00 credits · Undergraduate

This course explores the making of modern South Asia. We will examine how the British East India Company established its foothold in India in the 17th century and the nature of British colonial rule over the subsequent 250 years. We will also investigate the nationalist struggle, led by Gandhi (amongst others), which culminated in independence, but also the violence and chaos of partition, out of which the nation-states of India and Pakistan were born.
