Since its beginnings in New York, hip hop has grown to be a global phenomenon that shapes music, culture, and politics in the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. Our focus will be on linking “the music itself”—the recordings and live performances of hip hop—to the cultures that hip hop emerges from and shapes.
