ANTH 3347
Mortuary Archaeology
Investigate how people have memorialized their dead throughout time and around the world, through the creation of ceremonies and rituals. Examine the use of cemeteries, monuments, grave goods, and the treatment of the bodies of the deceased. Understand how these practices reflect the deep ways in which humans experience and understand grief, and the complex relationships between the living and the dead. Approach death and the dead through a broad cross-cultural lens, exploring ideas of human-animal relationships, kinship, ethnicity, and concepts of the afterlife and the underworld.
