HIST 400
Beating the Market? A History of Communist Economies
The goal of this course is both to highlight the varieties of Communist economies in Asia and Europe and the ways that ideology, violence, institution-building and competition have shaped their contours and trajectories. Students will gain a literacy in the methods of economic history, an appreciation for how economic equalities drive state policy, and a knowledge of how ideology and institutions are co-constitutive.
