Advanced Orthopaedic Biomechanics
This course introduces advanced principles of biomechanics with emphasis on musculoskeletal and orthopaedic systems. Students will initially explore musculoskeletal anatomy, muscle mechanics, and joint loading, along with dynamic movement analysis such as gait. The course will then focus on tissue mechanics of bone (primary) as well as cartilage, ligament, and tendons (secondary), highlighting their roles in health and injury. Biomaterials and their applications in orthopaedic interventions—including joint replacement, fracture fixation, and implant design—will be examined. Computational and experimental methods for modeling and evaluating musculoskeletal function are integrated throughout. By combining anatomical knowledge with mechanical principles, the course prepares students to analyze normal and pathological musculoskeletal systems and develop solutions for clinical and engineering challenges.
