Service-Learning Specialization

Undergraduate

All PJ/IS students are required to select a Service-Learning course option according to their division PJ/IS. The service-learning course provides exceptional learning opportunities for teacher candidates to appreciate service learning as a teaching strategy with an enhanced understanding of the social, cultural and political aspects of teaching. A diverse offering of service-learning possibilities in the Faculty of Education provide teacher candidates with learning and teaching opportunities in local and international marginalized and vulnerable communities, international non-western contexts, or local out-of-school settings, with an educational approach that combines the practice of pedagogical skills with active community engagement. Such experiential and exceptional learning experiences enhance the teacher candidates’ understanding and appreciation of the relationship between students’ out-of-school lives and their school experiences, and enable the teacher candidates to become culturally sensitive and responsive teachers with broadened horizons.
