Interdisciplinary Education for Sustainability

Undergraduate

This course will engage teacher candidates in school-based and community-oriented activities in promoting ecological civilization. It will integrate diverse ways of knowing and being in addressing UNESCO’s (2005, 2016) calls for the integration of Sustainability Education in initial teacher education. Teacher candidates will learn how to integrate education for sustainability in their subject areas and engage school students in real-life problem-solving projects in response to climate change and other social-environmental challenges at both local and global levels. The course will provide teacher candidates with opportunities to learn about the deeper meaning of sustainability from Indigenous perspectives in Canada as well as wisdom traditions from around the world that emphasize harmonious relationships of humans, nature, and society. They will learn ways of interweaving diverse cultural knowledges holistically and creatively through their chosen interdisciplinary projects that promote education for sustainability in a culturally responsive manner for K-12 students. (3.0 Credit weight) (This is an experiential learning course.)
