Language Across the Curriculum (I/S)

Undergraduate

This course focuses on learning about literacy skills to scaffold Intermediate/Senior students’ engagement with challenging subject-specific academic language, concepts, and structures in textbooks as well as via a range of communicative contexts. It also explores current theories of sociocultural approaches to additional language learning with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) secondary students. The course offers practical ways to invite secondary students into reflective inquiry drawing upon content area literacy and disciplinary literacy. Teacher candidates are asked to consider their own positioning in relation to language learning and to what degree they see it as shaping social identity. Literacy is reading, writing, listening, viewing, and speaking; it is also the study of representation. The course considers some of the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines on content area reading, literacies, and teaching CLD students. (3.0 Credit Weight)
